Inheritance tax is one of the most plannable taxes there is — but only when it is started early and looked at as a whole. We map your exposure, model gifting and succession options, and coordinate with your solicitor on the legal drafting, so wealth passes to the next generation with as little friction and tax as the rules allow.

How we work

Inheritance tax is charged at 40% above the available thresholds, and the reliefs that shelter family businesses and farms depend on conditions being met long before anyone dies. Most families discover the gaps at the worst possible moment — when the planning window has closed and the options that were free have become expensive or impossible.

We map what you own and how it is held, model what would be due today, and set out what can legitimately change that: the nil-rate bands and how the residence band tapers, business and agricultural property relief, gifting with the seven-year rule, trusts where they genuinely help, and life cover written correctly so the payout does not itself get taxed. Everything is done in coordination with your solicitor, and reviewed as rules and family circumstances change.

Frequently asked questions

When should this planning start?

Earlier than most people think. Gifts take seven years to fall fully outside the estate, and business relief has its own qualifying periods — planning at 80 has far fewer options than planning at 60.

Will I lose control of my assets?

Not necessarily. Plenty of effective planning keeps you in control of income and decisions; giving everything away is one option among several, and rarely the first we recommend.

Does business property relief cover my company?

Often, but not automatically — trading businesses generally qualify while investment-heavy ones may not, and a large cash balance can jeopardise the relief. We assess it specifically rather than assuming.

Do you write wills?

No — that is your solicitor. We do the tax analysis that tells the solicitor what the will and any trusts need to achieve, and we work alongside them.
