Making Tax Digital is now law for sole traders and landlords. We maintain your digital records, prepare and submit your quarterly updates, keep your estimated tax position visible and support you throughout the year. Your Final Annual Declaration and Tax Return is quoted separately, because it depends on your complete income, gains and personal circumstances.

How we work

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is law: from April 2026, self-employed people and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates — with the £30,000 threshold following in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028. The quarterly deadlines are 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May, plus a final declaration by 31 January.

One MTD service covers your quarterly obligations: HMRC-recognised software (included and paid for), digital record-keeping from your receipts and bank feeds, all four cumulative quarterly updates prepared and submitted for you, your estimated tax position kept visible, and a named adviser through the year. We monitor deadlines, prepare each update and tell you clearly what we need from you and by when. Your Final Annual Declaration and Tax Return is prepared and priced separately, because it depends on your complete income, gains and personal circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

Does MTD apply to me?

If your combined self-employment and property income was over £50,000 on your 2024–25 return, you are in scope from April 2026. Over £30,000 joins from April 2027, over £20,000 from April 2028. The checker above gives your verdict in two answers.

Is the Final Annual Declaration included in the MTD fee?

No. The MTD service covers your quarterly obligations through the year — software, digital records, four quarterly updates, tax estimates, deadline management and named adviser support. The Final Annual Declaration and Tax Return is prepared and priced separately, because it must reflect your complete income, gains and personal circumstances. You are quoted for it before any work begins.

What are quarterly updates — is that four tax returns?

No. Quarterly updates are cumulative summaries of income and expenses sent from digital records; the tax itself is still settled once a year in the Final Annual Declaration. The volume of admin is why software and a firm that runs it matter.

What happens if I ignore MTD?

HMRC’s points system: one point per missed update, a £200 penalty at four points, and points persist for two years. 2026–27 is penalty-free for late quarterlies, but the obligation itself is live.

Is software really included?

Yes — HMRC-recognised software is part of the monthly fee, set up and operated by us. You photograph receipts; we keep the digital records and file the quarterly updates.
